Man-made rock dam

Millstream 38

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Issue:

Urban area with a street following the right bank. Trees are scattered and most properties have lawns with rock barriers. There is a lot of erosion where the banks are not stabilized. There is a small man-made rock dam across the river. ATV trail that follows the river bank and crosses in the water.

Action Required:

The eroded banks should be stabilized with rocks to slow down erosion. It is relatively simple to restore a buffer zone because all you need to do is let nature take its course. The first step consists of simply not cutting the strip beside the water. Before long, natural vegetation will reclaim its rights and benefit your property. Shortly after that, shrubs and trees will take root.

Update:

Most properties have a vegetative strip. Stone walls are installed to support the bank. There is erosion a little further down the river, but there is vegetation. The river doesn’t flows in the same place, a current deviation has occurred. An awareness sign should be installed to limit the crossing.
