Grants Stream

Bridge in between two farm fields

Grants brook farm

Cow enclosure

Grants 04

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Issue:

The Grants brook farm is located on route 322 just after the bridge. There is a big field with a cow enclosure. There is a fence and a buffer zone has been kept (sometimes wide, sometimes very narrow). The farm has two big fields on each side of the brook. There is a big private bridge that crosses the stream in between both fields (for farm tractors). The banks are steeper the further downstream you go. Lots of moss on top of the rocks. Manure is being spread on the fields to make them more productive.

Action Required:

Make sure the cows don’t have access to the river and that the spreading of manure is not reaching the watercourse. Restore the buffer zone by planting shrubs or by letting nature take its course by leaving a strip of untouched vegetation along the stream.

Update

Bridge in between two farm fields

Growing vegetation

Update:

The bridge is still present as well as the green moss on the rocks in the water. There is a good buffer zone on each side of the creek.
