Millstream River

Cluster of cottages and eroded bank

Eroded banks

Millstream 09

Friday, August 13, 2009

Issue:

Several camps are built within the riparian zone. The site is located in an elbow of the stream and there is excessive erosion of the banks. There is a lawn up to the water.

Action Required:

The banks should be stabilized in order to prevent further erosion. After, the buffer zone should be restored. It is relatively simple to restore a buffer zone because all you need to do is let nature take its course. The first step consists of simply not cutting the strip beside the water. Before long, natural vegetation will reclaim its rights and benefit your property. Shortly after that, shrubs and trees will take root.

Deflection wall

Update:

A deflection wall was installed at this site to trap the sediments that descend the river and thus stabilise the bank. Stoloniferous Cournolier shrubs have also been planted. Follow-up is recommended.
